sneak: je vous trouve très beau
[jan 22 2007, 22:38]
sometimes going out to see a movie after you've had a terribly horrible day is not a good idea. if you don't know what movie you're going to see, this is probably an even worse idea.
today it worked out. we watched je vous trouve très beau (i think you're quite beautiful), a french movie about a farmer who's lost his wife in a tragic milking accident ("never, never buy a used milking-machine. promise me!") and tries to find someone to fill the gap in his life – but even more importantly on his farm. he visits some kind of marriage broker and is offered to travel to romania to chose someone to follow him to france.
because he doesn't really want his friends in the village to know, he pretends to go to a agricultural equipment fair (to get a new milking machine)...
i'm not going to talk about the story too much because, well, admittedly it's rather thin – just as parts of the acting quality. he finds a woman he likes, takes her back to france, yadda yadda yadda, problems, yadda yadda yadda.
what made the film so special and so suitable for today was... well, i can't really tell what it was. the humor was one thing ("she'll have to be able to operate the washing machine" - "but surely that's not a top priority" - "yes it is, i don't have any more clothes to wear") but it was all really sweet and somehow surreal. parts of it (especially the scenes in the village) reminded me of waking ned devine, another brilliant movie that i'm sure i'll have to write about somewhen.
so, if you need cheering up or just want to go and have a nice evening with a couple of friends, go see this movie. and even if you don't enjoy it and laugh your ass of once he discusses with a friend whether the cat in the washing machine is "meant to be like that"... you'll have learned something for life:
"never buy a used milking machine. never!"
