rating movie: the prestige [jan 15 2007, 23:12]

another monday, another movie, this time the prestige, a film by christopher nolan starring christian bale, hugh jackman and the always-amazing sir michael caine.
the story revolves around two magicians who turn from colleagues to enemies, fighting over who can produce the most elaborate trick.
the setting of the movie is perfect. the end of the 19th century, the mixture between wealth and poverty, every new kind of science appearing to be magical... all this was portrayed in such an amazing way that you never dared take away your eyes because you might miss something.
the cast is extraordinary as well, christian bale and hugh jackman up front, of course. still, andy serkis, michael caine and (hear ye, hear ye) david bowie as nikola tesla really fill the gaps. i can't get why everyone's so keen on seeing scarlett johansson everywhere...
the movie itself is full of twists and turns. nothing is as it appears to be, nobody is who they pretend to be. the story is not told continuously, but rather jumping back and forth in time, producing a strange mixture between fast-paced scenes (that transcend probably a couple of years!) and long intimate moments between the characters.
well, about the ending... i had an idea about half way through the movie (which turned out to be right). the end however... either nobody except for me got it or it was properly disappointing. not in a "signs" sort of way ("oh, look, these aliens, isn't that amazing? so what's about them? what? they're really aliens? oh, shoot...") but still (if it was the case) ruining the overall feel of the movie.
nine point seven out of ten point two stars. don't miss this one!
