ghvc trier [aug 06 2006, 21:50]
there are some things you just can't believe. sometimes, there are things happening that blow away everything else. sometimes they're good. sometimes they're bad. sometimes they're amazing.
we went to trier today to witness the ghvc festival. we left at somewhen past nine, drove for a couple of hours (simply because taking the train would have been so much more expensive) and then arrived in the strangeness that is trier.
you may have heard about trier as it's filled to the brim with old roman ruins and is the birthplace of karl marx.
anyway, we met some great people there and, after some walking around the city, made our way to the "kaiserthermen" at about five in the afternoon.
everything started with a lot of great background. the setting was amzing and so was the weather. it had been dripping rain all day long but as we made our way to the stage through the crowd (which was, luckily, not too big), everything cleared up and the sun came out.
the first band we watched was pale:

i hadn't actually heard from pale before but what i heard convinced me to go and buy a record. really great stuff, but just the warm-up!
after pale, there were the amazing unreachable weakerthans:

if you haven't yet heard of them, go and get a record right now. they, just as the audience, were having a blast and the solo guitar player (that i can't remember the name of) made the greatest faces during every solo.
the next band, tomte, will not be described here, simply because we didn't see it. we set our priorities and got something to eat. sitting in the grass beside a nice little lake while listening to tomte fucking up was really good ;o)
as we made our way back, the sky was constantly getting darker and when kettcar started, all the lights on the stage were creating the most beautiful atmosphere:

that was the start of pure amazement. markus, the head of the band, was amazing, just as the rest. the crowd, now considerably bigger than before, had the time of their life while kettcar, as they said for the first time in their career, had the audience do some of that "rock crap" (ooooooh, shannana, shannana anyone?). great lights, great sound, great everything.
what followed was pretty peculiar - olli schulz und der hund marie:

possibly the shortest performance of them all but also one of the greatest. olli didn't spend too much time playing the songs that people expected but entertained everyone with stories of how he won a freddy kruger puppet at a splatter movie screening and went home in the bus with a t-shirt saying "hate is not enough" and the puppet under his arm. he then continued to fulfill one of his childhood dreams of having a performance like slayer or slipknot - something definitely worth seeing again. oh, and the songs he played were great too ;o)
last but not least, there was home of the lame:

lacking a band, there was just felix on stage ("my name is felix, not olli!"). he was quickly supported by the other bands though, with drums and beer bottles and pyrotechnics and beard. in the end, everyone was sitting on stage having a blast (and having had a couple of drinks apparently).
after everything was over, we had intended to visit the after-show party in, as i was told, one of the strangest locations for something like that in trier. we didn't go though, as it was hot and stupid and not free despite prior claims.
instead we went to a tiny bar, had a drink and then went to the mosel banks to talk (and shannana) some more.
we got up late today, had brunch, spent some time talking about geek stuff and music and, at about for in the afternoon, set off home again.
an amazing weekend. still flashed. still exhilerated. some more impressions:

looking forward to the recordings... off to bed now.
