rating call me a geek... [dec 27 2003, 22:02]

i think i will always recall christmas 2003 as the probably 'geekiest' time of my life.
well, what are you supposed to do when you get the special extended dvds of the two towers? seven hours of bonus material and almost four hours of the actual movie?
well, spent almost my entire thursday with it. still haven't seen all of the extras but everything's so incredibly great so far.
what's especially great about the extended cut is that you understand so many elements that have been changed so much better. faramir is - in contrast to the book - ... well, not the nicest guy. why's that? simply because he tries to please his father. sounds easy, is easy but without having seen the extended cut (or the return of the king) you wouldn't really understand that!
and the little moment of the huorn was great. and the little moment where... well, it slows a great deal of things down, that extended cut. i already hear people shouting about more of that 'don't be too hasty, young shirelings'-stuff by treebeard... still i think that it adds to the atmosphere - especially where treebeard is one of my favorite characters ;o)
and even some quotes of tom bombardil (whom i really missed from the fellowship) were included in ttt as something very much like old man willow appears in fangorn. aah, just so amazing!
and while i'm at it, a note for the people among us that have wondered why shelob is kankra in german...
well, i think that despite the sometimes really huge changes in contrast to tolkien's lord of the rings, jackson and the authors have done really well.
what really surprised me was the amount of time that jackson spent on the ending of the return of the king. not that i want to criticize it, i still think it's far too short! it's just the worthy end of the trilogy.
just one question remains after the extended cut... in one added scene boromir talks to faramir after having reconquered osgiliath in a kind of flashback. if you look closely, faramir wears the badge of minas tirith, the white tree, but also the stars above which were - as i thought - the sign of the true kings. as denethor (and thus his sons faramir and boromir) are only the temporary rulers of gondor, only isildur's heir (aragorn) would regularly be allowed to wear it, right? right? haa, you didn't understand a word, did you? muahahahaha!
err... well, forget that part.
